CrashOne, born John Matos in 1961, was raised in the Bronx. He began bombing trains at the age of 13 alongside older teens in the neighborhood, taking the tag name CRASH after accidentally crashing his school's computer.
By 1980 he was transitioning from train yards to galleries, curating the show "Graffiti Art Success for America" at Fashion MODA, credited with helping launch the broader graffiti-art movement. His career expanded across Europe, America and Asia, with work held in many permanent museum collections.
CrashOne has partnered with brands including Absolut Vodka, Fender Guitars, SoBella Handbags, Levi's, Tumi and Morphik, and co-owns the contemporary art gallery WALLWORKS NEW YORK and the retail boutique Wallworks TWO, both in the Bronx. His mural at The Knowlton, Crash, carries that graffiti lineage onto the Knowlton Walls.
